More than 500 sheep, hogs, steers, turkeys, rabbits, goats, and ducks were sold, August, 4, during the Klamath County Rotary Club’s annual 4-H, FFA Livestock Auction, held annually at the county fair.
Club President Matt Hurley, said “more than $1.4 million dollars was raised during the event, with funds going to individual youth sellers which represented more than 400 local families who participate in this event. It’s quite a site to see.”
The livestock auction began during the height of the Great Depression by the club in 1936 and has continued every year since then. The auction has raised millions of dollars for 4H and FFA members who raise and tend these animals and birds, learning how the food supply of the nation works. Before the auction, hundreds of buyers were treated to a free catered lunch specifically for them.
The events takes all 100 members of the Klamath County Rotary Club to participate as volunteers doing everything from set up to take down and everything in between during the day-long event. Proceeds from the auction and Rotary’s sponsorship also help support community projects in the Klamath community throughout the year. This years auction committee was led by Chris Moudry.
This event, 88 years running, remains one of the longest continuous Rotary projects in the country.
