Human Rights, the Environment, and the Law

Join us to find out how international experts are protecting the environment and championing human rights at ELAW.
Fellows Jimmy Munguriek Ufoy from the DRC and Bohdan Kuchenko from Ukraine will join attorney Bernard Ngalim at The Davis, this Tuesday, November 29th at 6 pm Pacific to talk with us about ELAW’s commitment to protecting communities and the environment.

What does that commitment look like? The Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide was founded in Eugene more than 30 years ago. Their mission is to “help communities speak out for clean air, clean water, and a healthy planet. We are a global alliance of attorneys, scientists, and other advocates collaborating across borders to build a sustainable, just future.”

Ngalim’s legal experience championing human rights in Cameroon and across Africa comes from his passion for protecting the rights of citizens affected by extractive industries, infrastructure development, and agribusiness.

He started his international career at Foundation for Environment and Development in Bamenda, Cameroon. He worked with Forets et Developpement Rural (FODER) to challenge extractive industry abuses in Cameroon and as a pro bono human rights lawyer representing aggrieved workers. He served as a human rights consultant with Africans Rising in Kenya and the Archdiocese of Bertoua in Cameroon. He earned a Master of Laws (LLM) specializing in Human Rights at Northeastern University School of Law, a Master of Laws in International Law at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (China), and a law degree (BA) at the University of Yaounde 2 in Cameroon.

Jimmy Munguriek Ufoy is an attorney from Bunia, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is Executive Director at Cadre de Concertation de la Société Civile de l’Ituri sure les Ressources Naturelles (Ituri Civil Society Natural Resources Consultation Framework). He teaches international law at the University of Bunia and is an active member of the
Extractives Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

Bohdan Kuchenko is on the science team at the Kyiv office of Environment People Law, Ukraine’s leading organization working to protect the environment through law. He received a Master’s in Ecology and Environmental Protection (2020) from the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and a Bachelor’s degree in Ecology (2018) from Odesa National Polytechnic University.

We are honored to host such distinguished experts committed to protecting the environment and fighting for human rights.
