Friends and fellow Rotarians, you are invited to join us for a beautiful night of live music from Costa Rica to Kenya this Tuesday, May 16th, at 6 pm Pacific.
Contralto Karen Esquivel will share her extraordinary voice with us and she will be accompanied by her husband – pianist and vocal coach Gustavo Castro.
Dr. Esquivel was born to a Costa Rican mother and a father of Mexican descent. She has performed as the soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Schubert’s Mass in C, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Dvorak’s Requiem, Pergolesi’s Magnificat, Falla’s El Amor Brujo, Stravinsky’s Les Noces, Duruflé Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, and Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky.
As a collaborative pianist, Costa Rican Dr. Castro has performed a vast repertoire with singers and instrumentalists all over the US, in Costa Rica, El Salvador, France, and Nicaragua. He recently recorded two sets of songs with soprano Dr. Camille Ortiz for Art Song Augmented, an online forum devoted to art songs by underrepresented composers created by Dr. Stephen Rodgers.
They have performed together internationally since 1997. They both serve on the Board of Directors of the Kenyan Classical Singers Organization, a program whose goal is to discover and support young, talented singers from Kenya. They also co-founded and co-direct Opera Nova Costa Rica, a training summer program for young opera singers from Costa Rica and the United States.
All are welcome for a very special evening with the Rotary Club of Eugene Metropolitan in downtown Eugene at The Davis Restaurant. And we are always delighted to welcome guests and friends from around the world via Zoom. Comment below for our permanent link.
