The current “pipeline” of applicants to be an Outbound Rotary Youth Exchange student next year is much lower than usual. We are not quite sure why this is happening, but it is clear that we need to do something different – and fast – if we want to reach the students who can really benefit from this type of an experience.
I have had a chance to read the reports of our Outbound students from District 5110 or seen them after they get back from their year abroad. Many of them call it the best year of their life! They learn to face challenges head on, meet new people, visit new places, try new foods, and grow and mature significantly as a person, A good youth exchange helps not only how our students see the world, but how they see their role in it!
Typically, we ask that prospective Outbounds complete the first part of the application by Oct. 31, but we are extending the deadline this year to November 20. The actual District 5110 interview will take place on December 14 in Grants Pass, but there are a number of items (medical and school-related) that need to be completed before then and that can take more time than people think.
If you can make a last second push to reach out to club members and school counselors that would be most appreciated.
