In each leaf of a tree is a solar powerhouse that uses light to convert CO2 and water into carbohydrates for growth and then releases the oxygen that we all breathe. It’s a miracle known as photosynthesis.
Governor Gerry Kosanovic asks each D5110 member to plant a tree this year. That could be about 3000 trees. Wow! Why? Because when we plant trees we benefit our environment in several very important ways:
- We fix carbon as wood and reduce CO2 in the atmosphere
- We provide shade around homes, parks and walkways to reduce heat
- We create habitat for birds and wildlife
- We reduce storm water runoff and erosion during flooding
- We promote healthier soil
- We beautify and re-green our landscapes in wildfire affected communities
So, this fall and next spring, let’s answer the Governor’s challenge and plant trees to support the environment. District Action Awards for tree planting by partners like the Boy & Girls Scouts, Youth Conservation Corps, and other youth groups can leverage and “Increase Our Impact.” Apply now! Perhaps there’s a neighborhood that needs more shade, or a fire affected recovery area in your community that needs native tree recovery, or a park/school yard that needs beautification. This is the fast way to reach the goal in your Club. Plant a tree, add water, and breathe easier knowing you have supported your environment.
