The Rotary Club of Redmond is proud to once again sponsor the “Gift of Literacy” project. The project was featured on KTVZ channel 21 in Bend. Marv Kaplan was interviewed for 20 minutes about the project. To watch the KTVZ interview, click HERE. To watch the video by Joe Kosanovic, click here.
All first grade teachers in the Redmond School District were given a set of books to read to their students. Then, each first grader selected one of the books as their favorite. Redmond Rotary provided every first grade student in the Redmond school district their selected hardback book, personalized with their name, inside a backpack. Once we received all the supplies, our Rotarians got to work assembling backpacks with personalized books.
The gift of literacy project aspires to show students how important literacy and lifelong learning is in Redmond. Research indicated that literacy is a gateway skill that must be encouraged and reinforced by many people and in many ways at a young age in order for children to be truly successful. This is the gift of literacy program’s second year and we hope to continue this important project.
The Rotary Club of Redmond would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to every Redmond school District first grade teacher for their hard work to make this possible. Special thanks to Saint Charles Health system and Selco Community credit Union for their sponsorships. To donate, or for more information: http://www.redmondoregonrotary.com/.
