Emerging Rotarians Practice Service Above Self

Eleven Rotarians in the Emerging Rotarian cohort arrived at the Bags of Love warehouse in Eugene on Thursday, September 7, to learn and serve.

Executive Director, Misty Hall, gave everyone a tour of the warehouse and described how they help traumatized kids. The operation is very comprehensive and thoughtfully administered. The bags are amazing with every child receiving pajamas, complete outfits, socks, underwear, age-appropriate toiletries, books and school bags, toy kits, purses or wallets, a jacket, a pillowcase, and sometimes shoes.  Each bag is finished with a stuffed animal with its head sticking out the top, an inviting comfort for traumatized kids.

Bags of Love works with 120 separate agencies including Oregon DHS and the FBI. Consideration is given to the situation kids are in, and the materials are carefully reviewed. (As Misty told us, books about Mommy and Daddy can be a problem if Mommy and Daddy are an issue).

This year, Bas of Love is on track to deliver over 6,000 bags, offering comfort and warmth at a time most needed.

Huge thanks to District 5110 for the Action Grant of $500 to support the work of Bags of Love and for the opportunity that this project provided to the Rotary Club of Eugene’s Emerging Rotarians cohort. The cohort included 20 new members or those looking at becoming Rotarians. This service opportunity was the perfect conclusion to their year together and the completion of 15 bags for 15 children will make the world a bit brighter.

Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Eugene. An outstanding project engaging new and soon-to-be Rotarians in an effort to improve the lives of kids that are facing troublesome times.  A perfect wrap up and recap of this amazing opportunity to be of service above self.  Well done! #RotaryDistrict 5110, #PeopleofAction – DG Jim
