Rotary Picks for Polio

Corvallis Rotarians support Rotary’s Polio Plus initiative with an apple picking fundraiser.

Gerry Kosanovic, Greater Corvallis

“You like apples?”

Judging from the turnout at Ken and Gale Pastega’s Corvallis property on Saturday, October 3, the answer was pretty clear: Rotarians like them a lot—especially when picking them helps eradicate polio! Ken, a member of the Rotary Club of Greater Corvallis, hatched this brilliant fundraising idea as a fundraiser for Rotary’s Polio Plus initiative.

Apple pickers of all ages descended upon the Pastega property for an afternoon of apple picking, fellowship, pizza, and refreshments

With several varieties to choose from, bags quickly began filling. And while the apple bags grew heavier, the pizza boxes grew lighter. By the end of the afternoon, bags were filled, appetites were satisfied, friendships were strengthened, and money was raised for Rotary’s PolioPlus initiative.

With World Polio Day approaching on October 24, the Apples for Polio fundraiser was another reminder of Rotary’s extraordinary commitment to finishing the job it began decades ago: eradicating polio from the face of the earth.
Every apple picked and every donation made helped support The Rotary Foundation and Rotary’s continuing worldwide effort to ensure that future generations of children never have to experience the devastating effects of this preventable disease.

A huge Rotary THANK YOU goes to Ken and Gale Pastega for opening their property and sharing their apple harvest, and to everyone who picked, donated, ate pizza, drank Pepsi, and joined in the fun.

It was a wonderfully simple formula:
Pick apples. Eat pizza. Enjoy fellowship. Fight polio.

And when Rotary fellowship and service come together for a cause like this, there’s only one thing left to say:
How do you like them apples?
