Developing District Leaders at Zone Institute

Our DG team, shown here at last week’s Zone Institute in Spokane, is dedicated to bringing innovative ideas and valuable insights back to the clubs in our District. We collaborate closely and draw on experiences and solutions shared by 30 other districts in our Zone.

Zone Institute 2024

Your District 5110 leaders undergo extensive training and development to better serve you. This commitment is significant, but the rewards are even greater. Last week, DG Nominee Bruce Allen and I attended a series of seminars from Monday to Wednesday with 30 fellow participants, all future District Governors for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 Rotary years. These leaders hail from across the Big West, ranging from Colorado to Hawaii. Beyond the training, the relationships and support network we’ve built will be invaluable throughout our respective terms as District Governors.

On Thursday, Bruce and I were joined by District Governor Nelson Mahler, Past District Governors Jim Polk and Aimee Walsh, and Emerging Rotary Leaders Gary Plano, Mike McGowan, and Freddy Saxton. Robie McGowan and Dave Reece also attended. Each meal featured inspiring keynote speeches and panel discussions. Zone directors and other dignitaries were present to answer questions and offer guidance.

The highlight of the week was the Saturday evening Gala, where Rotary International President Elect Mario Cesar Martins de Camargo delivered an impactful keynote address. Completing my Governor training and participating in the Gala, including walking the red carpet with my classmates, was an exhilarating experience – just like the thrill of hang gliding.

I ran into RI President-Elect Mario as we both waited for our departures from the Spokane Airport. I had the opportunity to chat with him for 20 minutes about growing Rotarians and our ability to serve. We talked about flexible club models – satellites and cause-based clubs. He asked me to send him information about a satellite club we started here in 5110 at a the Springs retirement community, because he intends to share success stories at the International Assembly. I’ll be following up on that, for sure!

I intend to put my all into serving you next year, because I know…we haven’t peaked yet!
