D5110 Rotary Peace Fellows Update
As members of our district’s Peace Committee, we have been reaching out to our district’s twenty surviving Rotary Peace Fellows. (We lost one, Anthony Suthan from Sri Lanka, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ashland, when he was involved in a motor vehicle accident.)
In an upcoming series, Chuck Root and I will share some wonderful responses.
Dan Odaba was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Medford. Though early on a street child in Nakuru, Kenya, he was able to prove himself and obtain an education with the assistance of a man he met while begging. He is currently a lecturer in international relations and peace and conflict studies at the US International University – Africa in Nairobi. He is deeply committed to the education of youth and to the principles of democratic governance and the development of a healthy civic society in Kenya. He views peace and conflict resolution as foundational principles on which to build both the government and economy of his country. He attended the Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok in 2017. He embarked on a peace education project in his country to start training young people on peace and conflict resolution skills as well as networking with other actors.

Dear Carol,
It has actually been a long time.
I am well and so is my family. I am still actively involved in Peacebuilding activities in our Rotary District 9212 (Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan & Eritrea). I officially became a Rotarian on 7th November 2020. Today, I am serving as the President of the Rotary Club of Nyeri, where I previously served twice as Governance & Ethics Director. Last Rotary year, our District Governor appointed me to serve the District as Vice Chair of Peacebuilding, Economic Empowerment and the Environment.
I am also working for the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a global think tank based in Sydney and a strategic partner with Rotary International. I have been trained as a Positive Peace Activator and conduct trainings whenever an opportunity comes up. I also conduct the Positive Peace workshops twice a year at the Rotary Peace Centre at Makerere University in Kampala. So far, I have been involved in training four cohorts of Peace Fellows.
Am very active on matters Peacebuilding and the Rotary Peace Fellowship opened opportunities to come up with sustainable solution in our communities. Am currently helping clubs incorporate the Positive Peace Framework in all the seven areas of focus.
Best,
Dan

Carol, Thank you for reaching out to our Peace Fellows. If the world is to ever know peace it will not be because of our politicians; it will be because of groups like Rotary International and of course individuals like Dan.
