I met with Club President Jeremy Hicks on Monday night ahead of their Tuesday noon meeting. He gave me an overview of the club, and we finished setting its goals. Tuesday, I joined them for lunch at Abby’s Pizza. The club has 14 members, but gets a lot done in the town of Prineville!
President Jeremy asked me to present several awards. One was to a powerful duo, Carol Benkosky and Kristi Hiassen, for their ongoing work on the rose sale and the green bag project, among others. Frank Portfily, a long-time Rotarian, was also recognized for his contributions. In the background, you can see their exchange student.
The Prineville area is beautiful – and dark at night. Not much light pollution out there.
A goal of the club this year is to expand the Barnes Butte Astronomy viewership. The club has added safety lighting up there. This is a great example of a club using the benefits of its location to serve and educate the community. The project goes on through the summer.
They plan to add five members this year to increase the impact of their projects and the scholarships they give out. We talked about ways they could attract people – and basically ASK!
An interesting fundraiser they host yearly is Rotary on the Radio – it’s an auction!
